ASU GSV 2016

Last week I had the chance to attend the 2016 ASU GSV Summit in San Diego. The conference which has been called “the must attend event for education technology investors” by the New York Times, was sold out. Approximately 3,500 people crowded into the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel for 3 days of key note speeches, panels, and presentations from the best minds in educational innovation.

Dr. Neal Lester of Project Humanities Visits UI

Recently I was teaching a class. I held up my iPhone. Then I asked, “what’s the purpose of education when we can hold the world’s knowledge in our hands?” There were a few minutes of sputtering answers, but the students came up with important insights. They argued that education was more about learning to think critically and ask the right questions than recite back information. I agree, and I think Dr. Neal Lester would also agree. Education is often more about the process and less about the content. The Humanities embrace this concept.

Peering Over the Horizon: The Knowledge Economy and American higher Education

A couple of years ago I was at a conference on distance education. In one session Daphne Koller, one of the founders of Coursera, was discussing the rise of MOOCs. While many people in the room rolled their eyes at the idea of MOOCs being the future of higher education, I had a different reaction.

September Fellows Forum - Dr. Allen J. Morrison

Recently, the Office of University Initiatives had the opportunity to have Dr. Allen J. Morrison, CEO of the Thunderbird School of Global Management, speak with us for the September 2015 Fellows’ Forum. Dr. Morrison came to ASU in 2014 as a Senior Advisor for Global Education and Executive Education Initiatives. Previously, he was a Professor of Global Management at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, where he was also the Director of the IMD Global CEO Center.

Dean Went Visits UI

On Monday July 20th, 2015 Dean Elizabeth Wentz spoke to the UI team as part of the monthly Fellows’ Forum series. Dr. Wentz is the newly appointed Dean of Social Sciences in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at ASU. Wentz is a Geographer by training and spent the morning discussing a wide range of topics including her interest in promoting women in the sciences.
